Types of Dentures: A Complete Guide for Patients & Clinics

Acrylic, cast partial, flexible or immediate — the right denture depends on the case. Here's how each type compares.

Types of Dentures: A Complete Guide for Patients & Clinics

Why denture type matters

A denture has to do three jobs at once: restore chewing, restore appearance, and feel comfortable enough to wear all day. Different denture types balance those jobs differently, so choosing the right one for the case is what separates a denture a patient loves from one that sits in a drawer.

Different types of dentures fabricated at the lab

Complete (full) dentures

For fully edentulous arches, complete acrylic dentures replace all the teeth on a gum-coloured base. Well-made complete dentures depend on accurate models, a correct occlusal plane and a balanced bite — get those right and retention and comfort follow.

Partial dentures — cast vs acrylic

  • Cast partial (Co-Cr)

A thin, strong cobalt-chromium framework with precise clasps and rests — durable and hygienic for partial cases.

  • Acrylic partial

More economical and easy to add to, useful as a transitional or budget option.

Flexible partial dentures

Flexible nylon partials use gum-coloured clasps instead of metal, so there's no visible metalwork. They're comfortable, lightweight and popular with patients who dislike the look or feel of conventional clasps.

Immediate & implant-supported options

Immediate dentures are fitted right after extractions so the patient is never without teeth, then relined as the gums heal. Where budget and bone allow, implant-supported overdentures offer the best stability of all — and we fabricate the prosthetic components for these cases too.

How to choose

The right denture depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of the remaining teeth and ridge, aesthetics and budget. We'll advise per case — send us the models and prescription and we'll recommend the option that fits the patient best.

Frequently asked questions

Which denture type is most comfortable?+

It depends on the case. Flexible partials are popular for comfort and no visible metal; cast partials offer rigidity and longevity; complete acrylic dentures are standard for full arches. Implant-supported overdentures offer the most stability.

What's the difference between cast and flexible partials?+

Cast partials use a rigid cobalt-chromium framework with metal clasps; flexible partials use a nylon base with gum-coloured clasps and no visible metal. Each suits different cases and preferences.

Can you repair or reline dentures?+

Yes — we handle repairs, relines and tooth additions for clinics, with quick turnaround so patients aren't without their denture for long.
