What is a PFM crown?
A PFM restoration has two parts: a thin cast-metal coping that fits the prepared tooth, and porcelain fired over it for a tooth-like appearance. The metal gives strength and a precise fit; the porcelain gives aesthetics.
Decades of clinical data stand behind PFM. When the metal margin is well-finished and the porcelain correctly fired, these crowns deliver years of dependable service — which is exactly why they remain a mainstay for bridges and budget-conscious cases.
When a PFM crown is the right call
PFM restorations pair the strength of a metal coping with the aesthetics of porcelain, making them an excellent choice in several situations:
- Long-span bridges
The cast framework provides rigidity across multiple units.
- Budget-conscious cases
A proven result at a lower cost than premium all-ceramic.
- Posterior units
Strong, dependable function where aesthetics are less critical.
How we build them
We cast the framework, control the metal thickness for an even porcelain layer, and hand-build the occlusion to your bite registration. Each unit is fired in stages, contoured, glazed, and checked for marginal integrity under magnification before it leaves the lab.
Aesthetics & shade
While an all-ceramic crown avoids any metal show-through, a well-made PFM with a porcelain-shoulder margin gives an excellent result in most positions. We match to the VITA guide and can add characterisation for a lifelike finish. Where the gumline is highly visible and aesthetics are critical, we'll honestly tell you when zirconia is the better choice.
PFM vs zirconia — which should you prescribe?
- Choose PFM
For economical, proven, long-span work and posterior units where cost matters.
- Choose zirconia
For metal-free aesthetics, anterior crowns, or maximum strength without a metal-ceramic bond.
Turnaround & 10-year warranty
Regular PFM units of 1–5 crowns are typically ready in 4–5 working days; larger bridges add a little time. All work carries our 10-year limited warranty against material and fabrication defects.
What we need to start your case
- Impression or scan
A clear margin capture so the metal coping fits passively.
- Shade
A shade tab and, ideally, a photo for accurate porcelain layering.
- Bite registration
So we build the occlusion right and minimise chairside adjustment.
- Prescription
Tooth numbers, single vs bridge, and any metal or margin preferences.
